I'm all for Open Source, but if the author does not want to Open Source it, that's his prerogative.

He should include a donation stats page, though, so we can see how much has been donated so far (and maybe even where the money is going to)

I for one agree with gssq about the donation stats. The transparency would most likely encourage more to donate -myself included.
